I PUT ON: Zaki Ibrahim

taken from her myspace

Zaki Ibrahim’s music is captivating and vibrant. It’s thick with poetics and steeped in a delicious mixture of earnest emotion and social commentary. Zaki’s path continues to progress, layering new experiences on top of each other that uniquely influence her musical ventures, culminating in her most recent project, eclectica (episodes in purple).

Zaki’s road has been paved with creative encounters that have propelled her forward – from a childhood steeped in musical influences, to performing at Capetown’s historic Armchair Theatre, then touring Canada with South Africa’s Tumi and the Volume, the Roots and Bedouin Soundclash, to collaborating with famed DJ/Producer King Britt, to now.

With a full length album in the works, Zaki will continue to break new ground, challenge assumptions and step outside her comfort zone. Her philosophy of making connections based on a mutual admiration for expression, creativity and the power of words, directs Zaki’s path. Expect the unexpected as Zaki continues to grow as an artist.

I got an email for PST earlier. Pacific Standard Time is an event held at 330 Ritch in SF every tues. It said the headliner was Zaki Ibrahim and last week I saw Stacy Epps there so I figured I should check out this weeks artist. To my surprise she has some good music out, has a kind of Amel Larrieux, Sade, Adele sound.. check her out.

Team USA routed Germany 106 - 57

Dwight Howard led team USA with 22 and 10, while Dirk Nowitski led Germany with 14 and 8. After destroying Greece and Spain, I don't really think any team can stop us. USA will win gold. Every member of the USA team managed to score as well. It looks like germany benched Chris Kaman for playin like shit the last few games, maybe he shouldn't have pissed off his father and played for germany :p.

Rock The Bells

Jay Electronica @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Jay Electronica performing. I got to the stage around 10:50am, it was pretty dead. lol after his performance he told people to meet him on the side of the stage if they were tryin to smoke or get some drink tickets. I walked over there after his performance to get a drink ticket and he was no where to be found.. so then I went and bought a $9 watered down budweiser..

Murs @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Murs is a clown on stage. He was doin little cheerleader jumps between songs, I had never seen him perform live before RTB. He went on around a quarter till 12 and it was still pretty dead..

Immortal Technique from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Immortal Technique has a dirty ass mouth..

Dead Prez - Hip Hop @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Dead Prez was doin the usual speakin on their revolutionary stuff. It was kinda weird seeing 14 year old white kids throwin up black power and feelin their message even more than me..

Tyga @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

I left the main stage to promote for a bit and Tyga was performing on the second one. I don't like this song that much so I didn't feel like making the effort to nudge my way into the crowd.

De La Soul - Buddy @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

De La Soul was solid.

Kidz In The Hall @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Kidz In The Hall @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Kidz In The Hall was dope. I didn't know if they were gonna be there or not after Double O got put in the hospital after the last RTB. I was tryin to see if I could spot his black eye.

Method Man & Redman - I'll Be Dat from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Method Man & Redman @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Method Man & Redman @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Method Man & Redman had the best performance of the day, shit they should have went last. They had everyone run up to the stage. They passed a blunt into the crowd, were stage diving, standing in the crowd, talkin shit all that good stuff. That performance had me expecting more from the artists performing after them but none brought nearly as hard as Method Man & Redman.

The Pharcyde @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

The Pharcyde reunion. Dope seein them back together. They also covered Bobby Brown's My Perogative with Fatlip singing.. it was funny as hell.

Spank Rock from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Spank Rock. Can hear me on the phone durin that vid.. Performance was cool, I just remember I was gettin food and I heard "pop that pussy" or some shit like that about 11 times.

Nas from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Nas was solid on every song he performed..

Q-Tip @ RTB from b0ardz on Vimeo.

Q-Tip started out by himself wit Mos Def givin him some help.

ATCQ from b0ardz on Vimeo.

ATCQ # 2 from b0ardz on Vimeo.

A Tribe Called Quest. I was fuckin dead by the time they came on and just wanted to go home. They brought my energy back up. I've seen them perform before, wasn't much different from the last time. They only had 2 spotlights goin so Jarobi White was left in the dark a lot of the show.

I have some video of Mos Def and others that I may up later, overall Rock The Bells was the best shit I've ever been to.

I PUT ON: Esperanza Spalding

Hailed as a prodigy on the acoustic double bass within months of first touching the instrument as a 15-year-old, Esperanza Spalding has emerged as a fine jazz bassist, but has also distinguished herself playing blues, funk, hip-hop, pop fusion, and Brazilian and Afro-Cuban styles as well. Born in Portland, OR in 1984, Spalding was not well served by the public school system and soon dropped out of classes to be home schooled. Returning to the public school system at 15, she encountered her first acoustic bass (she had already been playing violin for several years) and immediately took to the instrument. Dropping out of school again, Spalding enrolled in classes at Portland State University as a 16-year-old, and earned her B.A. in just three years and was immediately hired as an instructor in the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston in the spring of 2005. After touring and playing with a whole host of artists, including Joe Lovano, Patti Austin, Michel Camilo, Charlie Haden, Regina Carter, Pat Metheny, Dave Samuels, and a host of others, in addition to heading her own jazz trio, Spalding recorded and released Junjo on the Barcelona-based AYVA imprint in 2006, following it with the simply named Esperanza on Heads Up Records in 2008.

I stumbled upon her on a blog and she's a talent that should definitely be shared.

Dizzee + Hiero

Im not gonna front and say I've always been a fan of Dizzee Rascal.. I first heard one of his songs several years ago. I thought it was ear punishment. Gave him another listen a few months ago and I think I've been missin out.. He's putting out some good music right now. I saw him 3 weeks ago in concert at Mezzanine while promoting and I video taped a bit of the show.

no future Album for A Tribe Called Quest

A Tribe Called Quest Reunion Album Will Never Happen | Hip Hop News > HipHopDX.com

Just read this on HipHopDx.com. It's a little disappointing to hear. I had thought a future album was inevitable because of their performances together for the last few years. It is a smart thing to do though. There are too many older artists who have tried to make comebacks and released some trash. They can still rock a live show and hopefully they continue performing for a while.

Oden is back

http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/oregonian/index.ssf?/base/sports/121790850650380.xml&coll=7

from the Oregonian

"TUALATIN -- The rehabilitation of Greg Oden and his right knee is officially over.

Now, it's all about basketball.

So on Monday, the Blazers' 2007 No. 1 overall draft pick who missed all of last season because of a knee injury, began the latest and most significant step in his comeback. He practiced for the first time in full-contract drills, going up against teammate Channing Frye for 45 minutes at the Blazers' practice facility in Tualatin.

For moments, it was awe-inspiring. Early in the workout, Oden took a long stride and ripped at the rim with such ferocity that the shot clock mounted on the backboard shook for more than five seconds punctuating one of his dunks. "....

Jane Doe "Bullshit" feat. Talib Kweli & Black Thought (Unreleased)

 from okayplayer

Many of you may have forgotten (myself included) about a NY emcee by the name of Jane Doe. She definitely could spit, but kind of vanished into obscurity after awhile. Anyway, our boy 88-Keys was telling us he produced an album for her back in 2000 slated to be called The Introduction. Since it never came out (and never will), 88 said he would hit us with some tracks, starting with this one song called "Bullshit" feat. Talib Kweli and Black Thought.

Carlos Arroyo to Maccabi Tel Aviv

Arroyo signs three-year contract to play for Israel's Maccabi Tel-Aviv

Veteran point guard Carlos Arroyo, whose future with the Orlando Magic appeared to vanish after limited minutes in the playoffs and the Magic's recent signing of Anthony Johnson, has accepted an offer from Israeli giants Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

Arroyo's agent, Leon Rose, confirmed the signing to ESPN.com on Sunday night after Maccabi Tel-Aviv coach Effy Birenboim appeared on the country's national sports network (Sport5) to tout what is believed to be the richest transaction in Maccabi's history.

Sources in Israel said Arroyo will receive an estimated $2.5 million net next season -- roughly the equivalent of a $5 million NBA salary after taxes -- as part of a three-year contract. The deal includes an opt-out provision that will enable Arroyo to return to the NBA after each of the next two seasons if he chooses.

Another player to europe. I was an arroyo fan when he started to kill in Utah, but kinda became sour on him after his funk with Sloan. He hasn't had a huge role on the magic for the last few seasons so I can see why he's goin overseas.
